The Veluwsch Stoomtrein Maatschappij operates a heritage railway from Apeldoorn, past its locomotive and carriage depot at Beekbergen, along the valley of the River Ijssel and across the heathlands of the Veluwe to Dieren. Most trains complete the journey in 1 hour 15 minutes with stops to look at sights along the route. Trains have been running on this route since 1975, and the association has accumulated a stock of 15 steam locomotives, 22 diesels and 30 carriages. Most of the steam locomotives are German, and of the classes that sustained services in the Federal Republic in the decades after the Second World War. There are six of the celebrated Krieglok 2-10-0s, as well as examples of classes 23, 50, 64 and 80, and two Polish locomotives both built in 1957. The diesels are all from Nederlandse Spoorwegen, and include six 0-6-0 shunting engines made in Britain by the English Electric company. The association operates special luxury trains using some distinguished coaches from its collection, amongst them three built in Birmingham in the mid-1920s for the Compagnie International des Wagons-Lits, four MITROPA coaches built in the former GDR for international services and a set of seven Austrian coaches from the 1950s. The association offers day excursions combining travel on the steam trains with journeys on boats sailing on the River Ijssel between Zutphen and Apeldoorn.and on certain days trips on the trains can be linked with rides in vintage motor coaches.
