Rising, like a concrete-and-steelneedle, from the Degerloch Forest, the Fernsehturm, completed on 3 February 1956, was a symbol of Stuttgart’s recovery from the Second World War. It was designed by Dr Fritz Leonhardt, an engineer practising in the city. Most previous transmitting towers were simply lattice-work steel masts, but Leonhardt created an elegant structure that was also a visitor attraction, with a viewing platform, a high-level restaurant and a beer garden at ground level. From the platform visitors can see the Alps, the Black Forest and the vineyards of the Neckar Valley.
