Technopolis Industrial Gas Museum

The Industrial Gas Museum operates in the premises of Athens gasworks. When entering the museum, the visitor can get general information on industrial history and industrial heritage. Inside the museum the history of Athens gasworks along with other gasworks in Greece and in Europe is being displayed. In the European gasworks sector a view on the architectural metamorphosis of gasholders around Europe is also presented. All the texts and info inside the museum are bilingual (greek/english). There are thematics on the neighbouring district around the gas plant. Visitors can listen to oral testimonies inside the retorts, watch the steam machines function (with electricity), 3D screens explaining the function of the gasworks apparatus, search an interactive map of Athens (where he can pin a streetlamp and learn the date this street was lighted). There is also a great variety of exhibits (old gas-house apparatus, gas stove, gas lamp, gas cooker, gas waterheater etc.). In New Watergas building visitors may visit Museum’s Gift Shop and watch documentaries on Athens gasworks.

The Gas Museum, which opened in 2013, is part of Technopolis (Gazi) a large cultural complex that since 1999 has occupied the buildings of the former gasworks, and is dedicated to the memory of the Greek composer Manos Hatzidakis (1925-94). Eight of the buildings bear the names of Greek poets, and one of them houses an exhibition commemorating the soprano Maria Callas (1923-77). Technopolis is the venue for cultural events of all kinds, and is an outstanding example of the adaptive re-use of an industrial complex. The scale of the buildings, once used for producing gas for the city, is as eloquent a statement of the significance of the industry as any of the displays in the Gas Museum.
