A beautiful two-storeyed mill dating from the late 18th century, built from white-washed local stone, with a grain-drying kiln and adjoining miller‘s house. The mill has been restored and brought back into working condition in order to demonstrate the milling process, and guided tours are available. The mill machinery, which includes three pairs of millstones, is driven by a pitch-back waterwheel fed by a restored lade, dam and millpond.
In addition to the working machinery, displays in the mill include artefacts relating to milling, such as hand-powered grindstones (quern stones). Typically, mills like New Abbey ground oats, barley, wheat and pease produced in farms nearby, which were then consumed locally as staple foods. In the 19th and 20th centuries, competition from large steam-powered mills in the cities resulted in local mills such as this converting to the production animal feed. New Abbey ceasing in 1948, but was rescued by a restoration programme which commenced in the 1970s.
