National Maritime Museum

The maritime museum was established in 1960 and is responsible for the conservation of several historic buildings in one of Europe’s most important ports, including three traditional granaries built between the 15th and the 17th century, one of them of 8 storeys, a 200 m stretch of quay, together with the best-known symbol of the city, the port crane, built in 1442-4, which was capable of lifting up to 5 tonnes, and also served as a city gate. It was worked on the treadmill principle by gangs of men. The museum also preserves the cargo steamer Soldek, the first to be built in Poland after the Second World War.
