The tiny republic of San Marino is an enclave surrounded by Italian territory around the three peaks of Mount Titano in the north-eastern Apennine Mountains. It has a population of around 30,000. Tourism comprises a significant part of its economy and it has a variety of museums, some belonging to the state and some privately-operated. They include a museum of wax figures, a museum of emigration and two museums of weapons.
The industrial heritage of the region can best be appreciated in the Museum of Agriculture, Culture and Traditions in and around the house of Fabrica in Montecchio. The house was first recorded in 1770, and it was restored by the state authorities. It portrays the daily life of an agricultural community before the mid-20th century. Displays include tools such as sickles and hoes made in the locality, as well as copper pots, smoothing irons and other household utensils. It is possible to see the spinning wheels and looms used for the domestic manufacture of fabrics, as well as the vessels and other equipment for making cheese and butter.
