Maritime Museum of Asturias

The Asturian Maritime Museum in Luanco, opened in 1948, is the oldest museum in Asturias. Its current exhibition is housed in a new building constructed between 1998 and 2001. Four sections present life in and with the sea, shipbuilding and navigation, fishing and fish processing and the (canning) industries that developed with it.

The marine biology department introduces the world under water. The marine fauna and flora are brought closer to visitors with numerous exhibits: from fossils to aquariums with live fish, life in the sea is shown over millions of years up to the present day. The 'Carpentry at Riverside' illustrates the handcrafted construction of traditional wooden boats used in the 'traditional fishing' that provided a livelihood for coastal dwellers. The 'History of Shipping' is presented with over 50 model ships from ancient times to the present. The exhibition also focuses on sea rescue, the Spanish navy and the Asturian merchant navy.
