Hoechst is a well-preserved historic town on the north bank of the Main which has been part of Frankfurt, 10 km to the east, since 1928. Its porcelain factory is the second oldest in Germany. It was founded in 1746 but operated only for 50 years. It was revived in 1971 at the Dalberger House, where visitors can see porcelain being produced.
The most extensive display of Hoechst porcelain is in Kronberger House, the historic mansion of the Kronberg family which dates from 1577. More examples may be seen in the Corporate Museum of Hoechst AG, and in the Polongaro Palace, a Baroque mansion that was the home in the late eighteenth century of the tobacco merchant and manufacturer Jacob Bolongaro.
