The logging of trees in the forests is one of the old industries of the Slovak mountains. The construction of narrow gauge railways (most are 76 cm) that could go into the mountains helped to increase production. Čiernohronská railway opened in 1909 and went by branches into the mountains for 132 km. It was in regular operation until it closed in 1982. It reopened in the early 1990s from Čierny Balog to Hronec. Visitors can take trains from Čierny Balog for long and short journeys. At the Čierny Balog station is a small museum of forest railways with a working model that children can operate, equipment and photographs. Outside, several locomotives and wagons are on display.
