Anderton Boat Lift

Located near Northwich in Cheshire, the Anderton Boat Lift is one of the greatest monuments to Britain´s last canal age and known as the "Cathedral of the Canals". Built in 1875 and silent for 20 years, now re-opened after a £7 million restoration, the world’s first and England´s only boat lift.

Experience the Anderton Boat Lift in the same way boaters did in bygone times. Take a 30 minute trip on the Edwin Clarke glass top boat as the magnificent and impressive lift towers above you. Travel through time as the boatmaster recounts its fascinating history and picture the many colourful boats that used this important structure, carrying cargo around the country. As an alternative or even as an addition, enjoy a relaxing 30 minute pleasure cruise along the River Weaver Navigation to Northwich Town Swing Bridge and back.

The modern attractive Operations Centre houses a fascinating interactive exhibition explaining the history of the lift and its unique place in waterway history. Come and see the lift operators at work as they control the Victorian mechanism from a bank of high tech computers. To complete your visit, enjoy a walk in the nearby Anderton Country Park or along the canal towpath.
