Did you know ...
where to find the longest graduation tower in Europe?
638 metres long and 12 metres high – these are the stately dimensions of Europe’s longest continuous graduation tower. It is located in Bad Dürrenberg at the river Saale. The mighty structure, dating to the 18th century, was designated to clean and concentrate the saline waters that provided the small town in Saxony-Anhalt with a rich source of income. Only in 1963, 200 years after the discovery of the saline springs, salt production ceased for lack of profitability. Today Bad Dürrenberg is officially recognised as a health resort. The graduation tower is still in operation and shows at close hands the dripping of water leaving behind a concentrated amount of mineral content. The museum in the Borlach tower uses vivid means to tell visitors about the history of local salt production.
