The city of Szentendre lies 15 km north of Budapest at end of the HÉV suburban railway which was modernised in 1991-92, when a depot dating from 1914, when the line was first electrified, was adapted as a museum which opened in 1994. There are five exhibitions rooms and two large display halls showing the history of public transport in Budapest and other cities, displaying both the infrastructure and the vehicles used. The displayed include the reconstructed mechanical engineering workshop from the 1914 depot. In the display halls and in the yards outside are numerous tramcars, suburban railway coaches, some steam locomotives used on tramways, baggage cars from the era of steam operation, buses and trolley buses, together with service vehicles for maintaining the catenary and snow sweepers.
