Rattling looms, creative fashion laboratory, modern high-tech: tim, the young Augsburg Textile and Industrial Museum, which opened in January 2010, connects the rapid development of the local textile industry with an exciting trip into the history of fashion and clothing over the past two centuries. The framework enables this historical Augsburg Worsted Spinning Mill (Augsburger Kammgarnspinnerei - AKS). They let employees talk and show textile machinery in various stages of development and present catwalk shows with fashions from Biedermeier to Strenesse. Central to the permanent exhibition is the extensive sample book collection of the former Neue Augsburger Kattunfabrik (NAK). Using an interactive screen, visitors can become designers by projecting textile samples from the 19th and 20th centuries on to more than four meters high, rotating female figures. Intelligent clothing and other innovative developments illustrate an exciting high-tech sector. Children follow their own museum path on which they weave, knit or print. Special exhibitions, fashion shows, lectures and concerts complete the programme.

Just in time, they startet their work, the members of the former Association for the establishment of an industrial museum in Augsburg. It was the time of the widespread closure of large textile mills, buildings which in earlier years had provided employment for thousands of workers. To preserve the heritage of the local textile industry, association members, many of whom were former textile workers, started to save the machines from the bankrupt factories. So they laid the foundation for the subsequent National Textile Industry Museum Augsburg (Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum Augsburg - tim), whose collections now include textile objects and machines from all over Bavaria.
Machinery, used by workers over many years, document today not only the history of technology, but also demonstrate the daily work in the Augsburg textile factories. Unique is the NAK sample collection, mentioned earlier, an archive that includes about 1.3 million fabric samples, from the 1780s to the 1990s. Through the joint efforts of the Association, the Free State of Bavaria, the city of Augsburg and the local savings bank, the sample book was preserved and safeguarded for Augsburg. That this museum is located in the Augsburg Worsted Spinning Mill (Augsburger Kammgarnspinnerei - AKS), restored by the architect Klaus Kada from Graz, is no coincidence. The AKS, founded in 1836 by the entrepreneur Friedrich Merz, was the first major industrial company in the city and operated until 2004. With more than 2,000 employees at one time it was the largest Worsted Spinning Mill in the Federal Republic of Germany and thus represents the importance of the textile industry for Augsburg. The interactive museum's displays range from the production of raw materials through to the finished garment and also the development of the textile industry from the hand loom to the high-tech weaving machine.
