Terracotta Museum of Ceramics

Since the late Middle Ages, pottery has been the most important economic activity in La Bisbal, providing work for a significant percentage of the population. The Terracotta Museum preserves and displays the rich cultural heritage that grew from this industry. It is housed in a former pottery factory enhanced by impressive new architectural interventions. Original chimneys, workshops, clay deposits, clay mills, kilns and ovens can be seen. The permanent exhibition is divided into four sections: raw materials and environmental conditions, pre-industrial ceramics, industrial-era ceramics and artistic ceramics. The collection, which is displayed throughout the buildings, consists of more than 10,000 pieces, including vases, plates, tools and utensils from the Girona region. In addition, the Catalan government has donated some 3,000 ceramic vessels from all over the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. Temporary exhibitions show the works of established makers. Visitors can purchase local pottery from the museum’s shop.
