South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum

The museum occupies part a former Royal Air Force (RAF) base with buildings that date from 1938. It is run by a voluntary trust and works in partnership with the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group. It shows a large collection of aircraft, from the early years of manned flight onwards. Doncaster was the location for the first air show held in Britain, in 1909, and the museum has biplanes flown there. From more recent times it shows fighter jets such as the Harrier and Meteor and light aircraft, helicopters and gliders used in civil aviation around the world. Aircraft can be seen in the hangers and outside and more are under restoration. Many are complete while some are represented by cockpit or fuselage sections. Displays ​present the history of early aviation, radio and radar, the Second World War and the Falklands conflict of 1982 (including four British aircraft and two flown by Argentine forces). An RAF operations room from the Battle of Britain in 1940 has been reconstructed.
