Museum of Bath at Work

Bath is a World Heritage city famous for its Roman baths and Georgian architecture but it was also a working city. The museum tells the stories of its varied industries. Two thousand years of working life are on display, including a Victorian ironmonger’s, an engineering works, the workshop of a cabinet maker and reconstructed underground workings for the beautiful Bath limestone used to build the city. The centrepiece is a reconstructed Victorian plant for making and bottling non-alcoholic drinks, with machinery in working order. Other unusual items are a gas engine made by a local inventor, a self-winding clock of 1866 and a motor car made in 1914 by the Horstmann Car Company of Bath. The building was originally a covered court for playing ‘Real Tennis’ dating from 1777.
