Quarries of Mount Penteli

Pendeli (Pentelikon, Penteli, Pentelicus) is a mountain, 18 km north of Athens, from which stone was supplied for the construction of the Parthenon, and which has been quarried ever since. Since the twelfth century most of the land in the vicinity has been owned by the monastery Moni Daou Pendeli.

A trail guide has been published that guides visitors through the principal quarrying sites, including a 137 m inclined paved way along which large blocks were slid down to lower levels from which they could be transported to Athens and other cities.
