Myllysaari Museum

Myllysaari means „Mill island“ and the names origin is from the Middle Ages when there were up to 16 grain mills in the area. Over 150 years ago the first paper mill was founded into the junction of waterways. The mill village became Valkeakoski, one of the most well known paper industrial cities in the country. Nowadays the old red brick factory building in the heart of the city, by the beautiful canal, is home for two museums and functions as a venue for cultural events.

In the museum there is a permanent exhibition that tells a story of the history of the Valkeakoski and Sääksmäki area. The journey takes the viewer from the pre-historic era to the modern times and brings people from the past to life. The strong industrial heritage is an important part of the exhibition. Also several changing ehxibitions take place at the museum every year. In Myllysaari one can also visit Finland's Football museum.

Some few hundred meters away there is Kauppilanmäki outdoor museum where visitor can explore how factory workers lived from the late 1800s to the early 1900s by visiting the workers houses, smoke sauna and workers´ hall.
