Gondomar Municipal Museum of Filigree | The Filigree Route

Gondomar is known as the "Capital of Goldsmithing" in Portugal. Gold mining dates back to the Roman period, but it was from the 18th century that it established itself as the most important goldsmithing production centre in the country. Filigree occupies a prominent place among the creations of local goldsmiths; it is produced by hand in small-scale, family-run workshops, using techniques handed down from generation to generation.

The Filigree Route allows you to visit traditional workshops, meet genuine Gondomar silversmiths and get to know the entire artisanal production process. The visit begins at the Municipal Filigree Museum, which has a diverse collection of tools and machinery donated by local goldsmiths who want to share and make their craft known to the general public, as well as a valuable collection of unique filigree pieces.

At CINDOR - a professional school specialising in the arts of goldsmithing - it is possible to take filigree workshops, an authentic and enriching experience where visitors are invited to try out some traditional techniques.
