Feldtmann Wire Pin Factory (Ottensen District Archiv)

The Stadtteilarchiv Ottensen - Geschichtswerkstatt für Altona e.V. ( Ottensen District Archive - history workshop of Altona association) is a regional archive and the oldest history workshop in Hamburg. It is housed in the listed buildings of the former J.D. Feldtmann wire pin factory, founded in 1874. The factory was a supplier to the many industrial companies in Ottensen, especially the food and luxury food industries (fish processing, cigar factories), but also to the large local companies (glassworks, metal industry) and the shipyards in the ports of Altona and Hamburg.

Visitors can see and experience part of the former wire pin factory with working historic machinery and its own locksmith's shop. There is also an extensive collection of documents, interviews with contemporary witnesses and artefacts from the history of Ottensen and Altona, as well as an extensive library.

The Ottensen District Archive is a contact point for residents, historians and researchers interested in the local history of Ottensen and the surrounding districts. It also serves as a meeting place for events, lectures and exhibitions. The archive is open to young and old: school classes, personal research, family history, research for a dissertation or a film project - a wide variety of projects are supported and history is offered as a hands-on experience.
