Bury Transport Museum

Housed in a spacious railway warehouse built in 1846, Bury Transport Museum holds a collection of vintage vehicles, including double-decker buses, steam rollers, trams, tractors, commercial vehicles, cars and bicycles. The museum was begun by volunteers in 1973. Highlights include a horse-drawn tram, a 1956 Royal Mail Morris Minor Van, a Ford Model T from 1921, the ‘Hilda’ steamroller and a 1952 Dennis F12 fire engine. Visitors can build their own miniature bridge, go on-board the vehicles or dress in historical costumes. Features include a reconstructed railway manager’s office, ticket machines, railway furniture and models of houses, trains and vehicles. Craft workshops are held for children. The museum is operated as part of the East Lancashire Railway, a heritage railway that runs for 19 kilometres between Heywood in Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire.
