ExtraSchicht on 1 June: The Ruhr Metropolis culture festival

It's long been a top-class public attraction across the region: ExtraSchicht, a spectacular one-night showcase of industrial heritage in the Ruhr region - from Kamp-Lintfort in the far west to Unna in the east, from Dorsten in the north to Hattingen in the south. This year - the 22nd ExtraSchicht year - the festival also marks the official conclusion of the celebrations commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Industrial Heritage Trail. ERIH turned just as old and joined in the celebrations. And, of course, a number of ERIH sites are once again involved in ExtraSchicht.

Light shows and acrobatics are the major highlights. No fewer than three drone shows produce stunning light effects in the skies above the ERIH Anchor Points Zollverein World Heritage Site in Essen and LWL Museum Henrichshütte in Hattingen as well as the Westerholt Colliery in Gelsenkirchen. ERIH Anchor Point Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park will be crowned by a towering firework. In addition, the internationally renowned Flic Flac Circus bike stars will be performing thrilling shows with spectacular stunts. Further fireworks will be displayed at the Hammerhead Tower in Hamm, at Rheinpreussen Shaft IV in Moers and at the historic pithead of Fürst Leopold in Dorsten.

Another highlight of ExtraSchicht are the "forbidden" places that reveal some of their secrets on the "Night of Industrial Heritage". For example, ERIH member Ewald Future Site in Herten offers access to extraordinary "lost places": guests are allowed to enter otherwise forbidden areas and locked rooms of the Ewald mine. The Henrichshütte Ironworks in Hattingen also opens its doors for night-time explorers. Music attractions - such as "Back to the 80s" at ERIH Anchor Point LWL-Museum Zollern Colliery - complete the action-packed programme.

Visitors only need one ticket to hop easily between the 500 events at 35 venues in 19 cities. It includes all admissions, free shuttle buses and free travel on local public transport. At the box office on 1 June, the ticket price is 24 euros.
