The production of sugar was one of the principal sources of income in the Madeira islands, 1100 km south-west of Lisbon, where there are many remains of refineries. The museum of sugar is housed in a building

returned to Poland with his wife, on the first occasion, in 1964, driving all the way in his Morris 1100 car. An account of his life is retained at the Big Pit mining museum.
