Irugurutzeta Furnaces

Man has been using minerals from Aiako Harria since Roman times. At the beginning of the 20th century major mining activities were initiated in the Irun hills. Iron carbonate was mined from the Meazuri, Meagorri, Aitzondo and Basakaitz galleries to be burnt in the Iruguretza furnaces and converted into iron oxide thus increasing its metallic content. It was transported by train to different harbours, Bayonne, Pasaia and Bilbao, and shipped to Belgium, Germany and England.

However the furnaces are where the true focus of interest lies. There are still nine of the eleven original structures.
