Masson Mills Working Textile Museum

Masson Mill was the second cotton spinning factory erected by Richard Arkwright (1732-92) at Cromford in what is now designated as the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. While the first Cromford Mills complex, begun in 1771, was built in local stone and drew its water power from reservoirs fed by small streams, Masson Mill was in fashionable brick, included Venetian and Diocletian windows, a cupola and other features drawn from polite architecture, and took its power directly from the River Derwent. It was built in 1784-85 and was perhaps the first textile mill to be built in the style of a country mansion. It remained in use for textile manufacturing into the 1990s, and was subsequently adopted as a museum of textiles, a conference centre and a shopping village.
