Elm Tablet Factory

The slate heritage, part of ‘Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona’, which is listed as World Heritage Site, is presented at two sites, 8 kilometres apart: the Landesplattenberg Engi slate mine and the tablet factory at Elm.

The tablet factory cut slates and framed them in wood to make writing tablets and blackboards until 1983, when it was preserved by a trust. It has all the original tools, equipment and belt-driven machines. Techniques are demonstrated on guided tours when visitors experience the traditional smells of sawdust and glue.
