Nyugati Railway Station

Nyugati is one of the three railway terminals at Budapest. The impressive buildings opened in 1877 and are still used. The station was one of the innovative early designs of the Eiffel Company, completed the same year as the Douro bridge in Porto and twelve years before the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It replaced an earlier station. The train shed was not hidden behind a facade; instead the glass and steel structure was the centerpiece, with stone buildings each side designed by the Austrian architect Augustde Serres containing ticket halls, restaurants, waiting rooms and administrative offices. The station has preserved its architectural character despite threats of redevelopment since it was built.
