Descending down into the depth of the London Tube is like an encounter with an idea that revolutionised urban transport. It was 1863 that the first train ran underground here. In its inaugural year the subway took its passengers from famous Paddington station to Farringdon. 40 years later lots of tubes crisscrossed the subsurface of the metropolis, and still the trains make their way through these tunnels. Since then London witnessed the development of one of the densest and most heavily used transport networks in Europe.
