Zitttau Narrow Gauge Railway

This narrow-gauge railway on the border of Saxony, Poland and the Czech Republic extends for 10.5km from the town of Zittau, where it joins the Zittau–Heřmanice narrow-gauge railway, to the spa towns of Oybin and Jonsdorf in the Zittau mountains. It was built privately by local citizens led by Alfred Moschkau as the Zittau-Oybin-Jonsdorf Railway Company (ZOJE) and completed in 1890 with a single track of 750mm gauge. The main business of tourism was focused during short periods of heavy traffic, requiring a second track to be installed in 1913. In 1920 the railway became part of Deutsche Reichsbahn but it was transferred back to a separate company in 1996. The route climbs for over 100m. It still uses steam locomotives as well as two diesel locomotives. The oldest in use was made by Sächsische Maschinenfabrik, vormals Richard Hartmann in Chemnitz in 1908. Others were built for Deutsche Reichsbahn. The railway offers a wide range of mountain excursions for different interests.
