Ystafell Transport Museum

Located in Kaldakinn valley, between Akureyri and Húsavik, this family-run transport museum features a large display of historic vehicles. It was established in 1998 by the husband and wife Ingólfur Kristjánsson and Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir and was Iceland’s first transport museum. Ingólfur collected and repaired vehicles for over fifty years, most of which are now on display. The couple’s son, Sverrir Ingólfsson is now the curator. The collection includes some 280 twentieth-century cars, caravans, trucks, tractors and snow vehicles. Highlights include a Matra Simca Baghera, a Dixie Flyer, a Ford Mustang Coupe ’69, a Ford Falcon Sedan ’69, a Mercury Montego MX, and an Amphicar 770 that could drive on land or water. Many of the cars are in working condition following careful restoration on site. Other objects include car radios, licence plates, jukeboxes and hood ornaments.
