Volkswagen Auto Museum

Situated near the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, the Volkswagen AutoMuseum traces the history of one of the world’s most successful car manufacturers. The museum opened in 1985 in a former clothes factory. It was established by the Volkswagen Group but is now transferred to a non-profit foundation. A total of 130 Volkswagen vehicles are displayed over 5000m² of exhibition space – from rare concept cars and prototypes to mass-produced models. The stories behind each model are told. The collection includes many of the famous ‘Beetle’ models, including the 1200 Cabriolet from 1958, ‘Herbie’ of 1969 (from the Walt Disney film The Love Bug), and the Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupé of 1972. Other vehicles on display include the Volkswagen EA 97 of 1960, the Passat B1 1973 and the Scirocco I TS 1973 (Volkswagen’s first front-wheel drive coupé). The classic Volkswagen ‘Bulli’ vans are shown in all their variety – campervans, pick-ups, minibuses, commercial vans and even a fire engine.
