Villa Perrusson and its gardens are part of the famous Ecomusée Creusot-Montceau in Burgundy. The villa was built for the Perrusson-Desfontaines family, who were manufacturers of architectural ceramics. Jean-Marie Perrusson started a brickworks on the Canal du Centre in 1860 and then a tile factory in 1862. In the following years he opened factories across France. He built the first villa in 1869. This was enlarged in 1895 as a mansion in an exceptionally ornate ‘Belle Epoque’ style by the architect Tony Ferret. The buildings were a shop-window for the products of the factories, designed to be seen by passengers on the adjacent railway. They exemplified the architectural use of colourful ceramic floor and roof tiles, finials, medallions, balustrades, speciality bricks and other products. The gardens included a reflecting pool and an orangery. Nearby stables, offices and workers’ houses also showcased architectural ceramics. The house was acquired by the local authority in 2008 and restored in phases to open fully in 2023.
