The industrialisation of Saxony is based on mining which already started in the 10th century, thus creating capital and early technological expertise – a history that is particularly told by historical sites in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains). In the early 19th century textile processing became the driver of progress, thus entailing the rise of metal working industries. This made Saxony the cradle of the German automotive engineering and home to renowned automobile manufacturers until today.

The Saxon Route of Industrial Heritage" developed by TMGS illustrates the industrial history of the region with a selection of 51 sites, including exciting museums as well as active plants. Leading sectors are mining, textile industry, vehicles and transport, food and beverage, and the printing industry. Outstanding architecture is part of the route, too.
