The German Museum of Coin-operated Machines

This subject of this unusual museum is coin machines for playing games, selling things or playing music – a place unusually full of colour and sound. It presents the collection of the Gauselmann family, who acquired their first juke box in 1985. Two years later they had 400 exhibits. They loaned their collection for an exhibition at the Deutsches Museum in Munich and then opened their own museum at Espelkamp in 1995. In 2007, 650 machines came from Jean-Claude Baudot of Paris. Since 2013, the museum has been at Benkhausen Castle where it shows 1,800 coin-operated exhibits. There are machines to sell sweets, chocolate or sausages or to tell your weight. There are machines that play music, made between the nineteenth century and the modern juke box. And there are many kinds of games – table football, puzzles and gambling machines.
