Textilforum

Herning in central Jutland is one of Denmark’s youngest towns. It developed from about 1870 when the making of hosiery, long-established in the area as a domestic industry, was re-organised on a factory basis. The Textilforum, part of the mid-Jutland Museum Service, is based in a hosiery factory of 1876, a red brick building, with a 13-bay façade, and north-lit roofs. The collection was brought together from 1996 and includes looms, knitting machines and a large collection of garments. Visitors can see furniture coverings being woven on old looms.

The collection of the old museum at 32 Museumgade was closed in June 2014 and transferred to the Textilmuseum. In the museum park behind the old museum is a small open air museum with a farmhouse, yard, stable, barns, malt kiln, bread oven and smithy. Volunteers give demonstrations of crafts there every Thursday during the summer months. Elsewhere in the town a shirt factory of circular design now accommodates the city’s art museum, and a former dress factory houses the Danish museum of photography.
