Strathspey Railway

The society that preserves the Strathspey Railway was established in 1978 and manages a 16 km line from Aviemore to Boat of Garten that was originally part of the Highland Railway’s line from Perth to Forres. From the distinguished station at Boat of Garten trains continue to Broomhill on a line that was once part of the Great North of Scotland Railway. It is hoped ultimately to extend services to Grantown.

At Aviemore the Strathspey Railway uses a four-track locomotive shed built by the Highland Railway in 1898, and an enginemen’s hostel built during the Second World War to provide sleeping accommodation for crews working trains from the south bringing materials for naval and air bases. The company also has its purpose-built carriage sheds at Aviemore.

The Spey Valley is known for its whisky distilleries, and the company offers visitors a selection of Highland whiskies on its trains. Amongst the railway’s locomotive fleet is a former Caledonian Railway 0-6-0 and a ‘Black Five’ 4-6-0 of the kind that worked most trains in the Highlands from the 1930s until steam traction was withdrawn in the 1960s.
