Snowdon Mountain Railway

Snowdon, with a height above sea level of 1078 m, is the highest of all the peaks in Wales and England. Visitors can reach its summit on a railway completed in 1896 which uses the rack-and-pinion system invented by the Swiss engineer Roman Abt (1850-1933), the only one of its kind in the United Kingdom. The railway, of 800 mm gauge, was designed in Switzerland, and its four coal-fired steam locomotives, three of 1895-96 and one of 1922, were all made in Winterthur. The railway also uses four diesel locomotives supplied by Hunslet of Leeds in 1986-92. The line extends 7.53 km from a station alongside the main road in the village of Llanberis to the summit, with three passing loops.

The location is part of the North West Wales Slate Landscape World Heritage Site.
