Silesian Museum

The Silesian Museum complex, located in the former “Katowice Coal Mine”, together with other institutions established here, forms the Cultural Zone - a new cultural centre for the city. The "Katowice" coal mines operated from the third decade of the nineteenth century until the end of the last century. In total, it extracted about 120 million tons of coal. The site includes remains of characteristic, historic buildings, many of which were built in the 19th century, and some in the Romanesque and Gothic style. Especially these sites have been used for the new headquarters of the Silesian Museum.
