Westphalian Salt Experience

The Museum “Westphalian Salt Experience” traces 5.000 years of history that salt and brine made along the ancient trade route of the Hellweg and it sheds light on various aspects of salt that are less known. Brine, salty water which washes out subterranean deposits of rock salt, surfaced along the Westphalian mountains ranges so that – since antiquity – salt was produced from brine. The exhibition explains the origins of salt and brine, shows various crystalline structures of natural minerals and tells the story of salt production along the Hellweg trade route in Westphalia. Many interactive exhibits invite visitors to discover the story of the “white gold”, the exhibition is accessible and appeals to the use of all your senses while experiencing the museum.

The "Westphalian Salt Route" leads – ideally by bike – to sites of salt history between Unna and Salzkotten.
