Textile Museum

The Muzeum Textilu in Česká Skalice is the only specialist textile museum in the Czech Republic. Until recently it was a branch of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. The institution was founded in 1936 and moved to its present building, a nineteenth century Ursuline convent, in 1986. It is located within the historic heart of Česká Skalice, near the Rococo statue of St John of Nepomut, the remains of the medieval castle and the church of the Assumption of the Virgin which dates from 1726.

The main emphasis of the museum is on textile printing and its principal sections are devoted to textile production in the Czech lands before 1800, cotton manufacturing in eastern Bohemia, the role of artists in textile printing, and the history of textile printing internationally. There are displays showing links with ancient Coptic textile manufacturing. Visitors can see working looms, a workshop in which cylinders for printing were engraved, roller printing machines and tables for screen printing.
