Petroleum Museum Park

Crude oil was exploited around Vollezza in the province of Parma from the 1860s, and since 1905 the Società Petrolifera has been based in the town. The Petroleum Museum Park has exhibitions illustrating the history of oil extraction in the region but also displaying examples of the sustainable use of cultural heritage from other countries, drawing attention to the ways in which new uses can be found for historic industrial buildings. Most of the surviving structures in the oilfield are inaccessible for safety reasons but guided tours can be arranged to the three pumping stations that remain.
