National Park and Museum of Mining at Amiata

The mines around Monte Amiata in the province of Sienna were one of Europe’s principal sources of cinnabar, the ore from which mercury is obtained. The park displaying the monuments of the industry was established in 2002. The adjacent museum uses film footage to show working conditions in the mines, and has exhibitions of tools and clothes. Visitors can also listen to the testimonies of former miners. In the mineral park it is possible to venture short distances into the former workings
