National Museum of Transport

La Spezia is an important naval base on the west coast of Italy, and the terminus of ferries linking the mainland with Sardinia and Corsica. The transport museum originated in 1986 and is based in a former trolley bus depot. Many of the exhibits are trolley buses from La Spezia itself and from other cities in Italy, including a remarkable articulated example from Milan which is more than 18 m long and has four axles. A railway section with a variety of locomotives, carriages and wagons was officially opened in 2003. The museum includes a substantial library and documentation centre.
