Märkische-Museums-Eisenbahn

The Verein Märkische-Museums-Eisenbahn (The association for the Märkische railway museum) was established in 1983 and has its headquarters at Herscheid, 64 km north-west of Siegen. It commemorates the 1000mm gauge railways that provided local transport facilities in the western part of the Sauerland in the same way that the Vincinal served rural parts of Belgium. The lines included the Kreis Altenaer Eisenbahn which functioned between 1888 and 1967, the Plettenberger Kleinbahn of 1896-1962 and the Iserlohner Kleinbahn of 1900-64.

The preservation project is centred on the station at Hüinghausen on the line between Plettenberg and Herscheid which closed in 1969. The station, in the neo-Baroque style, dates from 1915 and was listed as an historical monument from 1985. Trains, made up of steam and diesel locomotives and carriages gathered from elsewhere, carry visitors on a 2 km journey to Köbbinghausen.
