Deutsches Museum (Transport Centre)

The Deutsches Museum’s collections of railway and road vehicles were removed in 2003 to a former exhibition hall in the Theresienhöhe area of Munich.

The collection of motor cars is one of the best in any museum in Europe, and includes a motorised tricycle made by Karl Benz (1844-1929), as well as racing cars and commercial vehicles. There are displays that illustrate methods of manufacturing motor cars and the displacement of horse transport by motor vehicles during the Second World War.

The railway collection includes the iconic German locomotive No 3634 of class S3/6 of the Bavarian State Railways that became No 18.451 of Deutsches Bundesbahn. It was built in 1912 by J A Maffei AG of Munich, and was one of 159 similar locomotives that from the 1920s until the early 1960s hauled express trains in most parts of Germany. It was placed with much ceremony in the Deutsches Museum in 1958, although similar locomotives continued working until May 1965.

Other sections of the museum are concerned with urban transport, particularly with tramway systems.
