Cork Museum

The change from an agrarian to an industrial society and, more recently, into a services one, that have undergone those outstanding populations that were developing the cork- stoppers industry, recognizes as lawful the effort of trying to restore the conscience of a characteristic culture. On this direction the Cork Museum is working, as the cork section of the Science and Technique Museum of Catalunya.

The Cork Museum is placed in Palafrugell town centre, in a rationalist building which was built by the architect from Gerona Emili Blanc i Roig, between the years 1931 and 1934. Nowadays the Cork Museum has one temporary exhibition hall available, with continuous programs all over the year and also other four permanent show rooms where we can find the biological and ecological aspects of the cork culture, describing the cork oak and the cork oak features as well as their obtaining process. Shown is the stoppers production process including the tools used for the handcarfted manufacture and also the first machines. Visitors can also see cork sculptures and bas-reliefs from Joaquim Vicens Gironella i François Pous and "La Taponera" choir (1859-1955) and the Clavé Choirs impact on cork-stoppers populations.
