Bakery Museum

The bakery museum in the old Zuider Zee port of Medemblik is one of the best places to gain an understanding of a traditional trade that was one found in every town in Europe.

The museum is located in a building of 19th century date where Cees de Boer began to work as a baker in 1930. It was adapted as a museum in 1985, and was visited by 2,000 people in its first year. It now attracts more than 50,000 visitors a year. Regular demonstrations are given of bread-making, using machines and utensils of the 1930s, and there are displays on the ingredients used by bakers in producing confectionery, in particular on sugar, marzipan and chocolate. The collection also includes delivery carts and posters.

There are excellent interactive displays designed for children. The museum is proud of its reputation as ‘the most delicious museum in the Netherlands’.
