Shepherd Wheel Workshop

Shepherd Wheel was one of the first industrial heritage sites to be preserved in Britain. A campaign to protect it as part of the heritage of steelmaking in Sheffield began in 1933. It is now run by Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust. It is located in an attractive public park called Whiteley Woods and is open at weekends. A waterwheel was here by 1584. The site was used until 1930 to turn grinding stones for making sharp steel knives. Individual knife-makers in Sheffield would rent a grinding wheel while they did their work. Visitors can see the reservoir and the waterwheel and two workshops with grinding stones.
