Sergei Pavlovich Korolyov Museum of Cosmonautics

This technology museum at the city of Zhytomyr, 140 km west of Kyiv, is dedicated to Sergei Pavlovich Korolyov (1907-1966), who was chief engineer to the space programme of the USSR until his death. Korolyov led the Sputnik project and sent the first man into space. The museum was built in 1991. It has an authoritative collection of material concerned with the Soviet space programme. Among thousands of exhibits are the Soyuz 27 descent module of 1978, a full-size replica of a Soyuz spacecraft and an example of the Lunokhod lunar rover that explored the Moon in 1973. A human dimension is given by cosmonaut space suits and food packs. Interpretation of the exhibits is enhanced by interactive displays. There are biographical displays about Korolyov, who was born in Zhytomyr and studied aeronautical engineering at Kyiv and Moscow. He was sent to Stalinist labour camps before being released to work on ballistic missiles for the Red Army. His childhood home was relocated to the museum in 1977, where it is reconstructed with personal contents.
