Seixal Ecomuseum, Branch Maritime Museum

The maritime museum at Seixal keeps alive Portugal’s ancient traditions of wooden ship-building. Seixal is the centre of a heavily industrialised region at the mouth of the River Tagus, 14 km south of Lisbon, and has been the home to a variety of industries, the monuments of several of which are preserved by the Municipal Ecomuseum.

The maritime museum practices and teaches the techniques used in building and repairing wooden ships, with a particular emphasis on the traditional wooden vessels used on the Tagus, and trips on the river are amongst the museum’s activities. The museum is a member of European Maritime Heritage, which promotes the operation of traditional ships.
